Bill Tipton graduated from Gerty High School and East Central State University.
After a professional baseball career in the New York Yankees organization from 1951-54, he began his coaching career at Calvin High School. At Calvin, Coach Tipton’s teams won 82 games and lost 17. After leaving Calvin, he guided Konawa High School to a record of 57-10.
In 1968, he moved to Carl Albert High School. In 19 seasons at Carl Albert, he coached the Titans to 492 wins while losing only 117. The Titans were Regional Champions nine times and the State Runner-up in 1979. Coach Tipton retired from Carl Albert in 1985 with a career record of 631 wins and 144 losses. In 1986, the Carl Albert baseball field was renamed Bill Tipton Field in his honor.
During his coaching career, he was the Conference Coach of the Year twelve times. He was The Daily Oklahoman Coach of the Year five times, the Big All-City Coach of the Year four times, The Tulsa World Coach of the Year two times, The Oklahoma Journal Coach of the Year once and the District 8 Coach of the Year once. In 1980, the Oklahoma Coaches Association selected him to coach the South All-State baseball team.
In 2008, the members of the Oklahoma Baseball Coaches Association’s Veterans Committee elected Coach Tipton to the Oklahoma Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame. He was inducted on February 7, 2009.
